I am always looking for ways to enhance the build of a bamboo rod. I often prefer the look of a rod without a winding check. I like the look of thread butting up against the cork grip. However, some-times when I prep the grip I don’t get a good fit between the cork and the rod. When this fit isn’t what I want, I look for help in the form of a winding check.
In a recent Proof Fly Fishing E-mail, I came across a simple solution for this problem.....
PF: What are your personal favorite
streams to fish?
Definitely the AuSable….my family history
goes back to the 1870s on this river. I grew up
in Oscoda at the mouth of the river and have
been fishing, hunting, and trapping on it since I
was a small boy. For the past several years we
have started to explore the upper Manistee but
80% of my fishing is on the AuSable system....
For over 150 years, craftsman have been hand planing split cane rods. It is remarkable how little has actually changed. The tools are still basically a hand plane and planing form of some kind. The earliest forms were nothing more than a groove in a board and the quality of the rod was entirely up to the skills of the craftsman. The strip was placed in the groove and planed on one side...
Controlling the temperature in bamboo heat treating ovens within ± a few degrees (Fahrenheit or Celsius) is highly desirable. Exactly what time-temperature heat treatment protocol to use is often controversial but precision temperature control is required regardless of the protocol. Ovens with strip heater elements are probably the easiest to control whereas heat gun ovens are reported to be harder to control......
PF: What are your personal favorite streams
to fish?
Easy to answer. The Madison River at the $3
Bridge area, Montana. For many years, my
wife (she also fishes) and I have been accompanied by a dog while fishing and this stretch of
the river is safe for a dog to run free. It helps
that the setting is beautiful, and the numerous
trout are challenging enough to make success
feel special....
When I first explored this idea, I discovered that not much information was available on the complete process of making agate stripping guides in the home shop. What little information there is, leaves so many steps required to complete the guide, unanswered. I had to sift through what little published information was available and just do it on my own. The first thing I did was to take a really good look at the guide, then reconstruct or reverse engineer it....
PF: How did you get into rod making?
I have always liked wood working and fishing like so many other here in Finland. It developed into flyfishing and fly tying, then to graphite rod building. I heard about bamboo rod making in 1998 and got a friendly warning that it will take all your spare time....
